Hello everybody,

God I miss blogging so much but however, due to the hectic schedule that's been going on in mylife lately, I can't help but to stop blogging for a while. Sorry.... But hey, I'm back now, better than ever guys. I hope you guys (readers) could bare with me.

Anyway, as many of you know that Raya is right around the corner and everybody is busy preparing for the day. My family is not an exception, we also have been busy preparing our house for the celebration. But before we celebrate, let's just finish this holy month of ramadhan okey? Question for you, "Full puasa you guys sudah?" I hope kan full. :) Anyway, I don't really have anything interesting to share with you guys "YET" but hopefully something interesting will happen during this coming raya season; so that I can share it with you people over here. *cheers*

Masterplan Aims To Lure Bruneians Out Of Private Cars Into Public Vehicles

Bandar Seri Begawan - An Attractive public transport system will be developed under the Bandar Seri Begawan Development Masterplan to encourage people to voluntarily get out of their cars and use public transport, according to the masterplan project director.

Regional Director of HOK Planning Group Steven Townsend said such a move will help overcome the Bruneian dependency of cars as a means of commuting and getting around the country and help relieve traffic congestion caused by too many private vehicles on the road.

Based on past experience with cities such as Houston, Texas and Los Angeles, California, Townsend said that previously, the general populations in these places did not opt for public transport.

"Initially, it was impossible to get people out of their cars and onto public transport," he told The Brunei Times recently.

He had observed that, similarly, Bruneians would not readily choose public transport as they preferred their own cars to travel almost anywhere in the Sultanate.

However, he added, the communities there managed to develop public transport systems which were more attractive than using personal vehicles, and as a result, the people steadily started using public transport voluntarily.

"You can do so much more on your ride to work such as reading the newspaper on a train or a bus, than you would driving a car," Townsend pointed out. "So the people chose to commute using public transport".

He said that people could not be forced to use public transport as there was a likely chance that they would abandon it after some time and revert to using their personal vehicles. With a more attractive public transport system, he explained, the initiative would be more sustainable and successful.

He said the same type of mentality could be administered in Brunei, while noting that the Sultanate had among the highest number of cars per capita in the region.

According to a study conducted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), there were 680 vehicles per 1,000 persons in 2004, which is equivalent to more than one vehicle for every adult over the age of 19 in the country.

Transport is a major issue which will need to be addressed in the formulation of the BSB Masterplan, which is expected to be completed within nine months' time by June 2010, said Townsend.

From a past report, Professor of Design, Technology and Management at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design Spiro Pollalis said that public transport and walk-able destinations will play a major role in maintaining a city that is both efficient and sustainable. He added that a lack of a comprehensive public transport could hinder Brunei's dream of becoming "city in a garden" by 2015, which is another objective under the BSB Development Masterplan.

The national director of Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), another consultant involved in the project, said that the team of consultants had to factor in that Brunei did not have the critical mass to support public transportation systems which have been implemented elsewhere. Marc Emile Shamma'a, said that due to the Sultanate's small population, the consultants would have to focus on customising public transport to make it suitable for Brunei.

We are not creating a metropolis. We are trying to see how Bandar integrates with the rest of Brunei and how it integrates into Borneo since it is the only capital city on the island," he said.

Shamma'a explained that the existence of an efficient public transport system would link Bandar not only to the satellite towns in Brunei, but also to other locations on Borneo, which in itself, would be advantageous to Brunei.

He acknowledged that in increasing attractiveness of public transport, the consultants could look at the systems of other countries. He said that Venice, which the BSB's Kg Ayer is often related to, had "water buses", which transport large groups of people across the winding water channels of the city.

Apart from its primary benefit to the masses, such unique aspects could be incorporated to make it an attraction for tourists as well as locals, he highlighted.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times

UBD Have Its Own Radio Station

Though it’s still at a trial stage, you can now listen to UBD FM/ETC’s Radio Online (UVibe FM) (name to be changed- WE NEED MORE SUGGESTIONS FOR THE NAME!) from this website. Only possible if you’re using UBD’s cable internet though. If you’re lucky you will get to listen to our student dee jays LIVE as they test out the station. If not, you will still be entertained with music throughout. IT’S LIVE NOW. You can also listen to the station from your radio in some parts in UBD (ETC, Library, SAS, FOS, IM and part of SHBIE); just tune that dial to 107.9 FM. As mentioned earlier, it’s still at a trial stage so you’ll be hearing some background noise.

Another good news for the hostelites, starting today there will be free wireless connection at the residential colleges. Right now it’s only available for communal use at the respective cafeterias of each residential college. Don’t fret though, the project is still running and the internet connection will be extended to residential blocks as well. But for now, enjoy surfing from the comfort of the cafeteria for free!

What UBD Is Made Up of? (Inside Story)

Hello everybody,

Just now I was surfing through Brudirect, I came across this article written by some user on Brudirect HYS. I was kinda shocked when I read it but I couldn't really give out my opinion in this matter since I am part of UBD itself. Therefore, I'm gonna let you guys (readers) to think about it and what do you really think of it.

The UBD campus entrance has a sign that includes the word "university" (or at least universiti). Unfortunately, what goes on behind that sign does not conform to expectations, and that is why people get frustrated with UBD.

UBD offers a certificate of dubious repute that is, however, recognised by Brunei Civil Service for employment in public sector jobs. That is why students enroll in UBD. Those who thirst for knowledge or skill go elsewhere.

Thus, to understand UBD, you really have to get that big sign out of your mind, and replace it with something closer to reality.

Unlike other universities, UBD does not recruit its lecturers. This is the responsibility of MOE and PSD (for foreign lecturers), although UBD departments usually make up the short list.
Both local and foreign lecturers have to provide the names of referees, who are always contacted as part of the hiring process.

Local lecturers usually do not have university teaching experience at the time of hiring. In fact, they are hired before they have taken their masters and PhD degrees. If they turn out to be no good at teaching or research it's too bad - UBD is stuck with them.

Foreign lecturers tend to have one foot in the grave and be in need of retirement funds. For example, old Sri Lankans in recent years have been hired in droves. It is difficult, at the end of their careers, to adapt Sri Lankan teaching styles to UBD students, so they are perceived to be bad lecturers (actually, they are workman-like).

Nuzul Al-Quran

Bandar Seri Begawan - "The Holy Quran is our friend and companion as well as teacher, in fact the Quran is our daily need, clothing and furnishing.

"In short, the Holy Quran is everything for us," said His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in his titah during the Nuzul A1-Quran Celebration National Level, last night at the ICC.

The Sultanate celebrates Nuzul annually. It is a significant day as it commemorates the revelation of the Holy Quran, and is one of the highlights during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Deviating away from the teaching of al-Quran means staying away from Allah the Almighty and is the same as running away from the guidance of Allah SAW.

History has recorded evidence that it is a bad omen to go against the guidance (Hukum Hakam) of Allah. This can be seen from the fate that had befallen on people before us in ancient times mentioned in the Holy Quran, said His Majesty.

"All of those are `Iktibar' (lessons) have in fact become a warning to those in the later times, including us people in the end of time," the monarch stated.

"We are thankful for we belong to people who follow the Holy Quran. We believe in it, and we believe in all that is said and all its teachings," His Majesty said.

His Majesty said that it is not that humans do not want to learn from the Quran, it is because they are more inclined towards temptations, which make them forget the important "Iktibar" (lessons).

Thus, subsequently people don't follow the teachings and undermine Allah's guidance by continuously going against His decree in what is Haram in food, socialisation etc. It has angered Allah, and with His wrath, Allah delivers upon them His punishment in various forms, such as natural disasters, commotions, food shortages, diseases and others.

"That is why, we in this country will always be consistent with our principles. We work and develop with the guidance of Allah and his prophets.

"There is no a better development other than that based on principles and guidance of Allah SAW. Such developments without doubt have their virtues and advantages," the monarch said.

"That is why towards this aim, religious education must be solid in our life," His Majesty urged.

"In actual fact, it is not a choice, but a must," His Majesty added.

Improves Disaster Response

Bandar Seri Begawan - As The H1N1 death toll and infections continue to rise in Malaysia, Thailand and lately in India, Brunei is taking every step to prepare for the worst.

To enhance the government agencies in preparing for pandemic disaster, a one-day workshop on Business Continuity Plan was organised by the National Disaster Management Centre yesterday.

Awang Yahya bin Hi Abd Rahman, Director of Fire and Rescue Department who is also the Director of National Disaster Management Centre, opened the workshop saying, "This workshop is the first of its kind and its objective is to enhance various government agencies' preparedness in time of disaster.

"As we all know, we are continuously confronted with challenges to sustain our core functions to handle unknown threats of pandemic influenza, natural disasters, climate changes or internal system failure.

"If we look back at the number of disasters that Brunei has faced, it shows an increasing trend. For example in 2007, we were confronted with strong winds and flood, in 2008 we had flood, strong winds and also landslides, but this year we are faced with a pandemic and haze apart from landslides, flood and fires.

"It is critical for us to learn about business continuity plan (BCP) or business continuity management in order to minimise the impact of the threats especially in our essential services and sustain our core business.

"The BCP was recommended to be undertaken during the 2nd Asean technical working group pandemic preparedness and response meeting in Bangkok this year. This was further highlighted during the national disaster council meeting in preparation of HIM pandemic effect," said Awg Yahya.

Dr Ingo Neu, Senior planning officer of UNOCHA Regional Office for Asia & Pacific, delivered the workshop along with Dr Goh Moh Heng, President of Business Continuity Management institute, Singapore.

Dr Ingo Neu in his presentation on the potential impacts of the pandemic on society, economy and different sectors highlighted the danger of three types of influenza A.

"The seasonal influenza causes viral respiratory infection in humans that kills about 500,000 people globally each year. The Avian Influenza, which spreads from birds to birds, the H5N1 strain is highly lethal among poultry and can sometimes infect humans. The current Influenza A H1N1 is reported in 60 countries.

"We must not forget about the lethal H5N1 virus. While we have one pandemic, we can't say we won't get another pandemic. And H5N1 would be more severe in terms of fatalities," he said.

There is currently no vaccine available and antibiotics cannot be used to treat viral infections. The use of antiviral can make illness milder and recovery faster. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within two days). In Thailand, it was found that maybe half of the fatal cases were due to slow treatment, he added.

Ina multi-sectoral preparedness, he said, "The health sector needs to provide leadership and guidance and take action to reduce health consequences as well as to raise awareness about the risk and potential health consequences."

In the non-health sector, there is a need to develop guidelines and implement activities to minimise the effect of a pandemic. The communities have to take action to minimise the adverse effects of a pandemic among individuals and families.

Dr Ingo Neu also showed a chart on the direct and indirect effects of a pandemic whereby the direct effect is sickness, death and massive demands on the health system, while indirectly the pandemic can cause widespread absenteeism, reduce or increase demand of certain services, cut in supplies and disruption of services.

The biggest of all impacts is absence from work as widespread absenteeism can cripple the country and economy.

Bandar Seri Begawan - Hazy skies hung on over Brunei, with Kuala Belait's air quality still remaining at unhealthy level (PSI reading of 101 to 200).

The Pollutant Standard index (PSI) readings recorded from all the air quality monitoring stations (PM1O) in all four districts yesterday were relatively higher than normal.

As of yesterday (Aug 6) at 6pm, the air quality for Brunei-Muara, Temburong and Tutong was moderate with PS1 readings of 79, 83 and 89 respectively. In Kuala Belait, the air quality was unhealthy as the PS1 reading exceeded 100, according to a press statement by Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation yesterday.

The public can contact the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation for any complaints on open burning through hotline 8999900/8837751/8837741 and query on air quality by contacting 2383222 ext 514 (office hours). The public can also access PSI readings on line at www.env.gov.bn

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has issued a chart on health guidelines during haze whereby PSI readings from 51 to 100 (moderate) will have a general health effect on few or none for the general population. Irritation symptoms may include cough, sore eyes and running nose. The advice is only for children to reduce physical activities and those with asthma, lung and heart disease.

For PSI reading of 101 to 200 (Unhealthy), the general health effects are minor irritation symptoms of cough, sore eyes, and running nose which can affect healthy population. The general population is advised to reduce outdoor physical activities especially for the elderly and those with lung and heart disease. Children are not to have any outdoor physical activities. Indoor activities can be done preferably in air-conditioned rooms with special air filtration system.

From 201 to 300 PSI reading (Very Unhealthy), the general health effects would be irritation symptoms such as cough, sore eyes and running nose may become more widespread in the healthy population.

People with lung and heart disease may experience significant aggravation of their symptoms as well as decreased exercise tolerance.

There will be no outdoor physical activities for the general population. The elderly and adults with lung and heart disease are not to have physical outdoor activities and reduce indoor physical activities as well, remain indoors with window and doors closed and fan switched on or preferably, stay in air-conditioned rooms with special air filtration system. Children should not have any outdoors or indoor activities.

In the range of Over 301 (Hazardous), healthy population may experience adverse symptoms such as severe cough, sore eyes and running nose that affect normal activities as well as decreased exercise tolerance. Elderly and the sick may complain of symptoms related to the onset of certain disease which may lead to premature death.

The whole population is advised to stay indoors with windows and doors shut and fan switched on or preferably air conditioned rooms with special air filtration system. And no physical activities. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Royal Gestures Moment of Pride

Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday officiated the harvesting ceremony of 'Padi Laila 2009' at the Agriculture Development area of Wasan paddy planting project.

In a highly symbolic gesture, His Majesty, armed with a traditional basket and knife, held the harvested paddy in the air to the applause of the invited guests and fanners.

The national food security drive to increase rice production has been highlighted in the monarch's titahs and the Agriculture Department has been carrying out projects in full force to increase the target of rice production to 20 per cent in 2010 and subsequently 60 per cent in 2015.

The ceremony yesterday was a follow up to the paddy planting towards self-sufficiency in national rice production and the declaration of the new name for the local rice variety - 'Padi Laila' - on April 27, 2009 at the same place. Formerly, the local rice variety was known as Brunei Darussalam Rice (BDRI).

The ceremony also kicked-started the harvesting activity in Kg Wasan in the Brunei-Muara District followed by other harvesting activities in the other districts.

Also joining His Majesty to harvest paddy were His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, HRH Prince 'Abdul 'Azim, HRH Prince `Abdul Malik and Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

Earlier, His Majesty was welcomed on arrival by the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Yahya; Deputy Minister, Dato Paduka Awg Hj Permanent Secretary, Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid; Acting Director of Agriculture, Hjh Normah Suria Hayati, and senior officers.

His Majesty and other members of the royal family harvested the paddy using the traditional method and viewed an exhibition of food dishes made with Taila' rice, Wasan Vocational School exhibition, Phil rice exhibition from the Philippines, as well as threshing, drying and milling demonstration using the thresher, flatbed dryer and portable rice miller machines.

The monarch also harvested the paddy using the Combine Harvester machine and later went to the main tower to view KOSEKA farmers harvesting paddy.

The Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources has reviewed the rice production programme, enhancing the production from 3.I-2 per cent (982.9 mt a year) in 2007 to 20 pre cent self-sufficiency (6,000 mt annually) in 2010 through a short-term plan and 60 per cent self-sufficiency (18,000 mt annually) in 2015 through a medium-term plan.

The short-term plan also known as Plan A runs from 2009 to 2010 and covers four approaches, namely extension of the existing areas and opening up new ones, enhancing the infrastructure of the existing field such as main roads, effective irrigation and drainage, as well as to flatten areas, changing of seedlings from traditional varieties to a high-yielding variety and capable to be planted twice a year and to provide relevant courses to the Agricultural Department staff and entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, the medium-term plan will be implemented from 2011 to 2015 and is based on three core approaches namely upgrading the infrastructure at Sangkuang and Labi paddy lots in Belait, Lekiun, Peradayan and Senukoh in Temburong as well as to plant the high-yielding variety twice a year in all fields and to continue technology enhancement efforts and capabilities of the human resources.

Besides short and medium-term plans, the department has also planned alternative action plans, plan B and C, to ascertain that the 20-per cent target in 2010 is achievable. Plan B covers the opening of new areas such as Buau, Kandol, Labi Baru and Lot Sengkuang in Belait and Limau Manis in the Brunei-Muara District and the planting of high-yielding variety in these areas between November 2009 and February 2010.

Meanwhile, Plan C was to plant paddy outside the season from April-July 2009 at the existing areas in all the four districts.

A ceremony to open up new paddy planting areas in the Brunei-Muara District was held on July 18, 2009 in Kg Batong. It is an addition to the existing paddy planting sites in the Brunei-Muara District, namely at Wasan and Bebuloh.

A research conducted on the infrastructure plan has indicated that some 1,344 hectares have the potential to plant paddy in the district, namely Wasan, Bebuloh, Batong, Pengkalan Batu-Panchur Murai, Sibongkok-Parit, Junjungan and Limau Manis, capable of producing 8,064 mt annually (26 per cent self-sufficiency). The 200-hectare site in Batong alone has the potential to see paddy planting done commercially.

Warning Against Open Burning

Kuala Belait - The Air quality in Kuala Belait for the first time this haze season hit the "unhealthy" level as the PSI exceeded 100 yesterday morning.

Compounding the detection of over 600 hotspots in Borneo was a massive forest fire in Belait Saturday afternoon, which was completely doused in the wee hours of yesterday morning. The fire scorched around 15 hectares of greenery.

The satellite imagery information received from the Mean specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) detected 625 hotpots in Sarawak and West Kalimantan, according to a press release from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, Ministry of Development.

Brunei Darussalam continues to experience hazy conditions. The prevailing south-westerly winds are transporting smoke plumes from the hot spots in Borneo to the Sultanate.

The overall air quality in Kuala Belait between 6 and 11am yesterday morning was unhealthy as the PSI exceeded 100.

But for the rest of the day, the air quality was moderate.

The highest recorded Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) for Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Temburong were 54, 64 and 58 respectively. The overall air quality for Brunei-Muara, Tutong, and Temburong until 5pm yesterday was moderate.

A PSI reading below 50 is good, 50 to 100 is moderate, and above 100 is unhealthy.

Fifteen firemen from Sungai Liang Fire Station led by ASO Md Rosdi Hj Abdul Halim, battled for eight hours to control a raging inferno that engulfed 15 hectares of forest Saturday night in the Belait District.

The fire started in Kg Agis and quickly spread through to the Semayan Forest Reserve due to the strong winds.

ASO Md Rosdi said although from the highway only the fiery glow of the fire could be seen, deep in the forest fire officials were struggling to contain the raging inferno which had spread through 15 hectares of land.

He said they received a call about the fire around 4.30pm, and three fire trucks and 15 personnel were dispatched to contain the fire deep inside the forest.

It was a dangerous situation, he said, as strong winds made the conditions challenging.

He explained that because they were deep in the forest reserve, their hoses could not reach the fire, therefore they had to use what they could to douse the flame, including stamping them with damp branches and bushes.

For water supply, they used the nearby fire hydrants and stored water in their trucks. They had to make many trips to the fire hydrants to have a constant supply of water to douse the flames.

He said that there were four houses that they had to protect from the fire and they did so by drenching the surrounding with water.

Around midnight the fire had spread to the main road in Sg Liang, the road connecting Kuala &Nit to the capital, and there was a real danger it might spread further.

However, thanks to the tenacity and dedication of the fire fighters, the blaze was doused just minutes before it reached the main road.

The fire was completely doused at approximately 3am Sunday.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation said it would continue to closely monitor the air quality and from time to time provide updated information and advice on the air quality through the local radio stations and television.

Young children, elderly and those with respiratory related illnesses, such as lung and heart diseases and those who suffer from asthma, are advised to stay indoors and refrain from outdoor physical activities during hazy conditions.

Despite reminders issued by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, open burning activities are still being carried out in many locations in the country, especially during evening hours.

The department has urged the public to refrain from conducting any open burning activities that will worsen the haze. It will continue to closely monitor the air quality and conduct surveillance on backyard and open burning activities.

Nurses Told To Adapt To Techonology Advances

Bandar Seri Begawan - Nurses today have to adapt and move away from their traditional roles of treating only bedridden patients towards a more highly technical role to keep up with current developments brought on by advances in technology and info-communication, said a senior official from the Ministry of Health yesterday.

Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance) at the Ministry of Health, Hj Rosli Hj Mustafa said that nurses today have to be efficient in identifying and handling problems faced by patients, in addition to having the necessary skills required to plan for the needs and wants of the patient according to their condition.

"Nurses are important colleagues of doctors and are the middle person to patients and their
families. They are involved in advising and educating the patients and their families on issues related to healthcare," he said during yesterday's launch of the Orientation Course for New Nurses and Midwives at the Health Promotion Centre, Commonwealth Drive in Berakas.

"This emphasises the importance of the task and responsibility of a nurse," said Hj Rosli, explaining that one can only become a trained nurse through a comprehensive network of practical and theory courses.

Hj Rosli informed the participants that apart from being efficient and highly skilled, nurses are also required to have good communication skills, especially when facing patients.
"Nurses have to constantly use a courteous language with a relaxed tone of voice," he said, adding that they should also be caring, friendly and cheerful while carrying out their duties.

The deputy permanent secretary also spoke of the importance for nurses to constantly improve themselves in terms of their skills and knowledge to further stabilise and strengthen public confidence in the quality of services provided.

"You have to be innovative by acquiring new knowledge, in addition to using newer, more creative, responsive and effective approaches in the promotion of health, prevention of illnesses, recovery and treatment," he said.

He also advised the new nurses and midwives to be prepared in facing whatever challenges that may come their way.

"You have to be able to control yourself in every situation by showing your attitude and identity, as well as a high level of leadership to maintain the image and good name of the medicinal and health profession," he said.

"The Ministry of Health is a service-oriented agency where our customers stand from the public and citizens of the country which will have different needs and expectations," he said.

"It is our responsibility as an organisation and health and medical institution to provide services that are thorough and of high quality regardless of where they are, be it in the urban or rural areas," added the deputy permanent secretary.

Small amount of students for Nursing and Midwifery?

INTAKE FOR NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

Again on the issue of Nursing and Midwifery in UBD. The proposal was for Nursing College to be upgraded to either an Institute OR a Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery in UBD. NOT to be squashed into the Institute of Medicine.

It's not practical and also totally inappropriate. There should be total Autonomy on the running of the nursing programmes and MUST meet most and foremost the LOCAL requirement which means based on the MIB as according to TITAH should be implemented in the programes. But somehow that doesn't seem to be the direction now because the courses seemed to have been shortened!!!!!

By the way why only 20 + - participants for the Diploma Nursing whilst only THREE (3) Diploma in Midwifery. There are already 2000 = TRAINED LOCALLY AND ARE PRACTISING IN BRUNEI'S HEALTH CENTRES ARE YOU QUESTIONING THE CREDIBILTY of their qualifications? Remember they were also externally examined by overseas Professors!!

Haven't the authority or relevant admins realize that there will be attrition and do you think the numbers will be able to accommodate the staffing level of the expanding health services in years to come!!!!!! These mistakes were rectified by people before but unfortunately many of those responsible for the future of caring for those in need seemed to have been overlooked and I am sure now being appreciated because suddenly you need Nurses and Midwives. They can't just be processed on a conveyor belt.

If you want Quality and Standard those responsible should know the MEANING of the word Not just squaring your shoulders in a threatening manner and shove everybody else aside to accommodate your personal egos.

Today, we spent the entire day at Ceca's house doing preparation for our farewell decoration. It was such a great day today despite a few heartbreak along the way by someone who we all love & trust before. But what's done is done, you can't reverse the past. Nonetheless, the show must go on. Prince Abd Qawi want to buy Brunei Hotel?

Bandar Seri Begawan - One of sultanate's oldest landmarks, the Brunei Hotel, is up for sale. Reliable sources said that several parties including Prince Abdul Qawi, the businessman son of the Brunei Foreign Minister, HRH Prince Mohamed has been mentioned as an interested party.

Business registry records show the hotel was founded in 1956 by a number of town elders, whose children today own the hotel.

"There are too many shareholders and sometimes it is difficult to arrive at decisions and so progressive changes cannot be made to the hotel easily," grumbled one shareholder recently. Quipped another, "It's the case of too many cooks spoiling the hotel's broth."

The main shares are in the hands of Yusof Holdings Sdn Bhd, a family foundation begun by one of the wealthiest men in Brunei, the late Pehin Orang Kaya Di Gadong Dato Hj Mohd. Yusof.

His son, Pehin Hussein, former minister of Culture, Youth and Sports and family members now hold a sizeable chunk of the shares.

Other share holders read somewhat like Who's Who in Brunei. They include the descendants of the late Dato Ong Kim Kee and his family. The late Dato Ibrahim former chief minister of Brunei, Kapitan Cina, the two Dato Lims and others are also included.

It is understood most of the shareholders will relinquish their holdings in the event of a sale, including Yusof holdings but some may elect to retain their investment.

It is understood around B$5 million has been mentioned but no firm date of the sale could be obtained by BruDirect.com

The hotel stands strategically on two lots of land at the corner of the town centre. But the smallness of the lots has imposed constraints in the hotel providing parking facilities and other amenities like a swimming pool and a garden.

It's likely the hotel may undergo extensive renovation after the purchase, sources said. But to what extent or when it is going to be it is not known.

Refurbished a number of times, Brunei Hotel, known as the capital's grand old lady have been having low occupancy for some time. Billed as a three-star-hotel it enjoyed its heyday when it was the one and only place to stay in the capital those days.

The four-storey, 63-room hotel does not have a swimming pool or a large enough banquet hall to hold state functions or other modern facilities. But it has basic facilities such as air conditioning, satellite TV, IDD calls, mini bar and piped music and there is a restaurant which servers international menu.

In the past after a number of tries it failed to keep up with fast moving times and potential guests drifted away to other hotels. But later other hotels sprang up and it suffered further hard times even though it received several face lifts from time to time. But its location, in the town centre was unrivaled and it was the most convenient place to stay for many business travellers and tourists in the capital where taxis and public transport are hard to come by.

As the hotel has numerous shareholders most are not impressed by its lack luster performance in recent times.

Landslide in Brunei?

Bandar Seri Begawan - Authorities have still not taken necessary measures to tackle landslide problems faced by residents in Kg Sungai Akar despite having been informed about the matter several months ago.

"I have written a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs three months ago, but am yet to receive a reply from them," said Village Head Hj Ramlee Hj Md Zain. "From my knowledge, the ministry is supposed to address a problem within two weeks after a complaint is lodged."

The act of procrastination by the ministry has caused unnecessary unrest and problems to village residents affected by landslides around this area, he added.

Hj Ramlee also highlighted the dissatisfaction of the victims in his letter to the ministry with regards to the decision taken by the Community Development Department, that the victims were non-compensable because the landslide did not affect the internal parts of their homes.

"Out of the 10 victims that I have listed in my letter, six of them have opted to fix the damage on their own with fear that the situation may worsen and lead to undesirable consequences," he said. "They could not wait any longer as they did not know exactly when the government will actually take action in rectifying the problem."

The government's lack of response and assistance forced Hjh Rajidah Hj Mohd Zain, one of the victims, to fork out her own money to mend the landslide problem that had affected her property.

"The landslide happened just after my husband passed away and that left me with financial constraint," she said.

"I had no choice but to borrow money from the village head, since it was very dangerous to leave the problem as it was because have young children running around the house."

Pointing to the visible cracks on the concrete floor, the 55-year-old widow expressed her fear that the rainy season may cause her property to experience another landslide despite having attempted to mend the previous damage.

"We are very worried about our safety, so I hope the authorities will really do something to help us, the victims," added Hjh Rajidah.

Another resident around the affected area, Betty Chang, commented that the roadblock placed by authorities near her house due to the recent landslide occurrence has caused much inconvenience to both nearby residents and drivers.

"The road has been blocked for many months now, but they still have not dealt with the problem," said the 45-year-old manager.

She added: "The two-laned highway road has been narrowed down to one. This is very dangerous because drivers often speed when driving down this road and some were not able to reduce their speed in time to avoid colliding with the traffic cones placed there."

Sugu Raju, 45, mentioned that the recent heavy downpour have posed a greater threat to drivers passing by the Simpang 51 road.

"It is dangerous and irresponsible for the authorities to have left their job midway in fixing the slope that had caused the landslide." said the Indian High Commission worker.

Bandar Seri Begawan - The increase in the mandatory retirement age to 60 years and the introduction of a new Supplemental Contributory Pension scheme were among the highlights of His Majesty the Sultan's titah in conjunction with His Majesty's 63rd birthday, telecast nationwide last night.

His Majesty said that despite the postponement of many of the events to celebrate His Majesty's 63rd birthday, the monarch noted that the zest of July 15 was still strong and fresh as what has been previously.

His Majesty appreciates this spirit and expressed his thanks to everyone for the support.
His Majesty highlighted Brunei's continuing peace and prosperity which should make us more committed to increase our efforts to maintain it.

Despite the effects of the global financial crisis can be felt in most countries including Brunei, the nation's economy continues to hang on because of the consistent efforts in strengthening and expanding it since the 1997 financial crisis.

The Sultan added that this is further supported by the positive report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently which stated that the country is implementing a strong macroeconomic policy and an effective management of the oil and gas resources.

His Majesty acknowledged the involvement of everyone especially those who have given their support and assistance in the rehabilitation.

With such enthusiasm, His Majesty was confident that this will increase the welfare and the strength of the country.

Besides facing different natural disasters, floods and landslides, the country is now facing the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic.

The ruler advised that as a religious country, we not only combat it using the typical way but also increase our prayers, reading of the doa and qunut nazilah and the hajat prayers.
"Whatever happens, the country's development will continue to move forward," His Majesty said.

On the nation's economy, His Majesty highlighted the National Development Plan 2007-2012, which is a package that can ensure that the nation's economy would expand, improve infrastructure and social development and through it the economic diversification.

Through the NDP, B$9.5 billion has been allocated to implement the development projects and also some B$1.1 billion for industrial and trade development.

Priority will be given in facilitating the industrial activities and the creation of dynamic and progressive local entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, in the business sector, His Majesty noted that efforts have been made by the relevant government agencies in easing the process of setting up business to a more efficient and same standard as other countries.

Recently, His Majesty's government approved several initiatives such as the land strata title, reduction of the national tender fees and exploring the capabilities of the ICT which all can facilitate and develop the nation's industry and businesses.

In recent years, His Majesty has also stressed the importance in increasing the level of Brunei's food security.

In relation to this, recently an initiative was launched to achieve self-sustainability in the production of rice from 20 per cent in 2010 to 60 per cent by 2015.

Last April, the planting of padi that can be done twice annually using a high quality yield began and hopefully by next month, people will enjoy the first harvest.
In line with this, more new sites will be offered to the private sector, locally and abroad for the commercial planting of padi and towards becoming a viable enterprise.

Meanwhile, touching on the issue of poverty, His Majesty stated that the government will continue to increase its efforts in assisting the needy.

One example highlighted by His Majesty is the implementation of the housing assistance project for the poor and needy.

The project involves the joint cooperation by other government agencies, corporate bodies and the public who donate into a fund through the zakat payment obligation.

Again, talking about zakat, His Majesty said that he is yet to see the progress of several issues raised during the Islamic Religious Council meeting held six months ago.

As one of the policies in strengthening the economy through conservation and saving culture, the government encourages this and because of this, His Majesty hoped that the financial institutions will provide the opportunities and ways so that everyone can save and at the same time receive good returns.

Besides this, the laws and regulations must also be strengthened to prevent people form being deceived by illegal activities such as get-rich-quick schemes.

In a commitment to ensure the prosperity and security of the people, His Majesty together with former Malaysian premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi signed Letters of Exchange on the demarcation of maritime boundaries with Malaysia.

His Majesty said that through this agreement, Brunei will have sovereignty on the continental shelf and 200 nautical miles of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

With this, Brunei will enjoy the benefits from the exploration of hydrocarbon and other maritime resources.

More opportunities will be opened wide and these will include investment, businesses and employment especially for those requiring professional skills.

His Majesty also stated that Brunei as an energy producer must use the resources efficiently while preventing wastages.

The monarch believes that time has come for the government agencies to revamp their polices and put forward steps towards efficient use of energy.

One example stated by His Majesty is that every year the government agencies use $68 million worth of electricity and if this can be reduced by 10 per cent, the country can save up to $6.8 million every year.

The approach by several countries like Japan as the most efficient energy user must be taken as an example, His Majesty added.

Filling vacancies speeded up

Touching on unemployment, the beloved ruler stated that this is a common economic issue and that the support by several private companies in providing work opportunities is greatly appreciated.

It is understood that the process in filling up a post in the government sector last year took between six and eight months and this has resulted in vacancies in new positions and retirements increasing to 5,000.

In His Majesty's opinion, the process should be shortened so that the number decreases and the applicants don't have to wait that long.

New Pension Scheme

On the welfare of the nation's human resource, the government takes their retirement seriously, especially those with low income. Towards this His Majesty announced a new additional retirement scheme called the Supplemental Contributory Pension (SCP). This new scheme is aimed as an addition to the current Employee Provident Fund (TAP).

His Majesty explained that under the new scheme, a retiree will get a minimum monthly annuity after he or she reaches the mandatory retirement age.

The SCP is also equipped with a survivorship protection to guarantee a participant's obligation especially if the person dies before reaching the mandatory retirement age.

And just like the TAP scheme, SCP will cover all citizens and permanent residents who are working in the public and private sector. This will also be expanded to the informal sector.

All participants and employers by law must contribute a certain amount every month and part of this will be used as contribution for the survivorship protection.

In order not to burden the employers, especially companies, the calculation of the contributions will be fixed to an appropriate amount.

For TAP participants who are unable to make adequate contributions before they reach retirement, they will also enjoy the benefits of the SCP because His Majesty has consented that the government provide additional assistance to this group in the form of a catch-up contribution or backdated contribution.

The scheme will be enforced from January 1, 2010 and an act will be introduced for its implementation.

Retirement age to be 60

His Majesty also took the opportunity to announce that starting January 1, 2010, the mandatory retirement age limit for citizens and permanent residents taking part in the TAP and SCP schemes will be increased to 60 years.

Moving on to the international arena, His Majesty stated that the country will continue to strengthen its bilateral relations and cooperation with other countries.

Brunei, His Majesty acknowledged, will also play a role in regional and international security affairs through participation in peacekeeping missions like what has been done in Southern Philippines, Lebanon and Aceh. The country will also provide humanitarian assistance to those experiencing natural disasters.

In line with the nation's capabilities, the participation in these missions will be considered from time to time.

In concluding the titah, His Majesty expressed his appreciation and thanks to everyone who has contributed their services to the government and also for the efforts in celebrating His Majesty's 63rd birthday this year.

Sultan of Brunei Frowns On Series of Failures And Faults

Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei expressed his unhappiness on many issues and made pointed queries during the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) meeting at the Fire and Rescue Department at the Old Airport yesterday.

Also present was His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.

His Majesty clearly made his dislike known on the initiative by government agencies in lobbying for donations for the monarch's birthday celebration.

The monarch questioned why the Islamic Religious Knowledge (IRK) is not among the compulsory core subjects in the new Sistem Pendidikan Negara 21 (SPN21).

The ruler wanted to know why low ranking officials travel alone to attend meetings while big groups accompany high-ranking officers when they travel abroad.

The Sultan also expressed his unhappiness as the initiative to boost self-sufficiency in food supply kicked-started only after the monarch himself repeatedly mentioned about food security in many of his titahs.

His Majesty said in his titah that the NDMC should be forward thinking in looking at events that have not happened but could occur at any time such as terrorism, tsunami and earthquake in the country. His Majesty added that he prays to Allah for the nation to be free from such calamities.

"What are the steps taken or our preparations? We should not laugh at this matter. In Brunei, we hardly see big floods and landslides. But recently such phenomenon (big floods) occurred and the flood reached a level hardly seen before and landslides damaged many houses, buildings and also claimed lives.

"These remind us to be cautious and not to wait for such calamities to happen. This is not right. Now, we are facing Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic, a scary global catastrophe where many social activities have been affected including celebrations in Brunei marking the birthday, which have been postponed. However, I believe the celebratory atmosphere and spirit is still in the air," His Majesty said.

Touching on His Majesty's celebration, the monarch thanked all parties who were involved in making the preparations. The celebrations are organised by the government, private sector and individuals and the monarch appreciates such efforts.

"But I want to comment on the initiatives taken by the government all of which don't please me, as they seem to burden the people. The organising committees make big plans by lobbying earnestly and ask the public to donate. Big companies are the main target.

"Those who come forward to donate would be given publicity, and gatherings would be held to accept the donations. It did not end there. Electronic and print media publish the news where the minister or high ranking officials appear to accept the donation as if the celebration is used to lobby for donation," the Sultan said.

"What I want to question here is whether such lobbying or campaigning for donation is appropriate and for the public to rush to donate for the celebration. In other words, the celebration becomes a tool for the public to donate in a swarm.

"I am convinced that in the name of celebration and with such a tagline, the response could be overwhelming. But the question lies in whether all people are sincere or are they forced to donate. This should be looked into and scrutinised and not be made into an annual routine or trend.

"Frankly speaking, I don't like the celebration to be used as a tool to attract donations or to accumulate donations. Is the budget not enough or is it not joyful enough?" His Majesty asked.

"I don't encourage wastage or to burden the people. What is more important, the celebration runs smoothly. We organise the event in large scale. In some other instances, we do the budget allocation and then calculate from it. Once the project runs, we demand a company to pay, and on some occasions the company is incapable to pay. The government in turn ends up paying for it. Is this not a disaster? A disaster in burdening the government and bringing misery to the people," the monarch added.

Touching on the Influenza A (H1N1), the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared it as a pandemic on June 11, requiring all countries to take precautionary measures against the spread of the virus. Brunei is no exception. From time to time, the nation has and will take preventive measures, but the cases continue to rise with one death already recorded.

"Our preventive efforts are to advise the public to maintain cleanliness, reduce social activities and to quarantine travellers who have just returned from abroad for a period of seven days.

"All these are just advices. The most important preventive measure is to temporarily prevent Bruneians from travelling to the affected areas, especially to countries worst affected. But this is not being carried out or thought until a circular was issued by the Prime Minister's Office on July 7, 2009.

"However before this, there were ministries or departments that sent their officials overseas including to the affected countries, even though the officials asked others to refrain from going abroad as the virus could spread to other staff or the individual himself/herself or the family.

"Such officials travelled as instruction was yet to be issued by the PM's Office. This is what I did not like to hear. The Heads of Department work just like a robot with no discretion or common sense.

"They just wait for instructions. If there is no instruction, they will not take any steps even though they are mandated to make certain considerations and take logical steps, especially relating to the safety and welfare of the staff," His Majesty said.

"Whilst we tackle H1N1 through health measures, we also recite doa with 'Qunut Nazilah' or Hajat prayer. The more the better as it is a commendable spiritual weapon in Islam especially when we are running out of options particularly when physical control seems to be ineffective as H1N1 cases continue to rise.

"Is it not appropriate for such spiritual efforts to be multiplied? But as I can see, there is no effort to upgrade this. Hajat prayer at mosques on Friday is not as intense as we would expect.

Qunut Nazilah' is only confined to Friday prayers when it could be extended to other prayers. In addition, there is no guidance or encouragement to the public to recite 'doa' or 'Zikir'. We have many religious officers but not even a single officer is seen handling a special programme, be it on television or radio to inform and lead the public on the importance of 'do& and Zikir' in an effort to protect oneself from such pandemic.

"We hardly see on TV any guidance or information such as 'Don Wirid' or `Zikir' which are good to be read and so on. Do you also have to wait for my order to do that?" the monarch asked his Cabinet Ministers.

"Schools have now reopened but there is yet any initiative to ask the students to recite 'ddoa' before learning to seek for Allah's blessings. Is it difficult to do, when religious officials are aware that children's 'ddoa' or prayers are swiftly answered as they are free of sin. Can't you think about this?" His Majesty asked.

"I wish to highlight another example of a big disaster, which is lack of food resources.

We have been independent for a long time, but the self-sufficiency of rice production is just 3.12 per cent. It's like nothing has been done. Has anyone ever thought of it seriously?

"Has anyone ever mentioned or highlighted such a 'magical' (3.12 per cent) figure among the ministers? No one," the Sultan said.

"Why is it not highlighted? Is it because we are scared to plan until I myself mention it repeatedly? Imagine if the supplier stops supplying us due to this crisis or other causes. I wish to mention a neighbouring country as an example whereby their self-sufficiency is 70 per cent. But they still continue and plan to go for 100 per cent self-sufficiency.

"After I repeatedly brought up this matter, the concerned ministry answered the call and praise to Allah, I am now glad to hear that in 2010 we will achieve self-sufficiency of 20 per cent and 60 per cent in 2015. This is the way to prepare and counteract disaster in the form of shortage of food supply and this is the way of looking at matters and not just with a 'wait and see' attitude.

"Six months ago, I attended an Islamic Religious Council meeting where 1 brought up the issue of a huge balance of `Zakat' money, which reached over $100 million. What puzzled me was that why such a huge balance existed. What was the meaning of such balance?

"Is it right that there are no more eligible recipients to receive them? In this context, I emphasised three categories of recipients namely the poor, needy and debtors or `Al-Gharimini.

"Is it true that there are no more poor, needy and 'Al-Gharimin' categories in Brunei? The answer is, they still exist So, if they still exist, how come such a huge balance existed? Why I raised this matter was, the issue of poverty, if left unchecked, would lead to disaster," said the ruler.

"Haven't we heard of people committing many criminal activities due to poverty? People kill due to poverty, people change religion due to poverty. Are these not a problem? This also goes to those who are in debt.

"Praise to Allah, the Islamic Religious Council has settled dues of 190 people under the 'AlGharimin' category for those under the national housing scheme, landless scheme, Kg Sg Bunga and Yayasan housing schemes amounting to two million, three hundred and seventy seven thousand, five hundred and seventy five and fifty four cents, ($2,377,575,54). Money that is still left unspent is around $50 million. Disaster is not just confined to flood, landslide, HINT but also many others," His Majesty said.

"In the field of administration and management, the Islamic Religious Council has outlined a guideline to send officers and staff overseas. There are instances whereby some ministries and departments are not aware of their staff welfare when sending them overseas.

"An officer travels alone to attend meetings, seminars and so on. This matter only happens to low ranked officers while directors (and above) as well as ministers, deputy ministers will be accompanied by many officers and staff and possibly with the diplomatic staff for consultations and discussions.

"Aren't there any similar needs for low ranked officers? The officer travels alone and possibly travels without the knowledge of the diplomatic staff. Is it a right approach or is the idea mature enough?" His Majesty asked.

"I believe it is not a mature idea but an idea that is selfish, an idea that doesn't show concern towards the subordinates.

"I do not see the rationale behind sending an officer alone. In addition, there are risks should the person need any assistance, whom to consult or should the person fall ill. These are the disasters faced by the officer who travels alone.

"If an officer is sent, then whom will he or she refer to in order to exchange ideas should the matter relating to policy arises. The managers and administrators should look into this matter.

"Another issue is when the travelling officer is a woman or when male and female officers who have no legitimate relationship travel together. This is worst in the context of religion, which could jeopardise the family," opined His Majesty.

"Several months ago, we were busy with SPN21. When I look at it, there is an obvious weakness. I found that Islamic Religious Knowledge (IRK) is not in the compulsory core subjects along with Malay, English, Mathematics and Science.

"It is astonishing to note that IRK sits together along with other subjects including music and drama. It is surprising to see IRK along with music and drama and not with the four compulsory core subjects.

"Why Malay subject is part of the compulsory core? Maybe, it is because it is mentioned in the Constitution as the official language. What is lacking in Islamic religion? It is also in the Constitution," His Majesty asked.

"In my opinion, it is more than just a compulsory core as it is the religion from Allah that is obligatory for all Muslims, which otherwise would become a sin for them," the monarch said.

"If the religious subject is taught along with drama and music, the latter (drama and music) would certainly be popular, highly in demand than the former (religious subject) in the context of mankind's psychology. Is this not a problem?" asked His Majesty.

Hello Everyone,

This morning was our CIN final examination at the UBD Chancellor Hall basement, together with some other UBD'ians. Everybody was anxious, feeling nauseous whenever thinking to sit down for the exam Huh, and that include my self. But however, with luck, all the questions that I studied for within' the last few weeks are the ones that came out. I felt relieved when I saw those questions and I thank god f0r letting my brain kick in that high gear. Alhamdulilah, I managed to answered all of the questions with such efficiency and I really hope I'll get a really good result. Amin.

Since my exam is over, it means that we're going to leave IM for quite a while but we'll definitely going to come back to further our study. Amin. However, the feeling of sadness is still inside our heart and I think of the rain earlier on as a symbol of our sadness to leave the University.

Hey everybody, today has been a rather stressful but exciting day. You see, right after we had finished our revision at the University, me, Ismail, Ebee, Rara and Kak Zuvita decided to go out and have a little fun of our own, whereby we stop by at this shop named Little M in Jalan Batu Besurat.

As you can see from the pictures below, we have been playing around like children, playing dress up. It was such a fun day to day and what a great way to de-stress from all the stressfulness of exam week. Huh, I can't believe that I'm about to finish my course so soon that I'm about to leave my university life. Furthermore, on this coming 25th of July, there will be a CIN Farewell Party - A Night To Remember at the Asma Hotel.

Since we all are busy preparing our self for the exam, we also are busy preparing for the farewell party. While our at Little M this afternoon, we were also looking for some costume to wear at the party. I am glad that I have found my perfect outfit.. I will be post it here right after the party.

Decision Taken As Precautionary Measure

The Minister of Home Affairs made the announcement yesterday

Bandar Seri Begawan - In view of the outbreak of influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in the country and as a precautionary measure, all events to mark the 63rd birthday anniversary celebration of His Majesty, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam have been postponed except for the mass prayer on July 14, 2009, the Minister of Home Affairs announced yesterday afternoon in a media statement of the National Committee of His Majesty’s 63rd birthday celebration.

Home Affairs Minister Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hi Adanan as the Chairman of the National Committee of the celebration said, “By Command of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, His Majesty said all events and ceremonies in the national and district levels have been postponed as a precautionary and vigilant measures amidst the outbreak of the H1N1 pandemic in the country to safeguard the security, health and prosperity of the citizens and residents of the country.

66 H1N1 Cases in Brunei Now, What's going on?

SHOCKING!!!!

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei experienced today the biggest leap in swine flu cases with 10 people falling ill of the disease in a single day ever since the outbreak here in June 20.

It also recorded the first case from the Philippines, a 29-year old female just returned from that country bringing the total number to 42 cases so far, a Health Ministry statement said today.

The ministry also urged that Government Departments, supermarkets, shopping centers, cinemas and other public places to provide hand washing facilities equipped with soap dispensers, along with gel/liquid sanitizers at all entry points.

The ministry said this in emphasizing the importance of the public's social responsibility in preventing Influenza A (H1N1).

The number of people put on a seven-day quarantine totaled 233 who had close contacts and out of that 38 are no longer in quarantine. These contacts do not have symptoms.

However, because of their exposure to the cases, they needed to be isolated and given tamiflu for preventive treatment.

A majority of these contacts are quarantined in their own homes, the press release added.

In safeguarding the public's safety, the ministry, continued to advise the public, who have recently returned from affected countries, within the past seven days and having symptoms, to seek immediate medical attention. It is also advisable to reduce social activities and crowded places.

The latest case is a 22-year-old female who just returned from Kuala Lumpur.

Others included a 25-year-old female who came back from Singapore. and a just arrived 29-year-old female from the Philippines.

A 14-year-old male, a 22-year-old female and five others ranging from nine to 15 are being treated.

There is also a 38-year-old local female brining the total so far to 42 cases.

All these cases, are still being investigated and undergoing treatment, and are in good condition, said the ministery.

Meanwhile schools in Brunei remain closed and are likely to be so for some days, a source speculated.

Al-Fatihah To Danish Muazzam

Tuesday, 30th June 2009 has been the saddest day for all of CIN as we learned that one of our colleague youngest son - Danish Muazzam Bin Ahmad had pass away earlier this morning due to Septicemia. For those who don't know what is Septicemia, it is an infection in the blood stream.

All CIN managed to attend the funeral and managed to go to the cemetery together as well. We all then saw Uncle's broken hearted look and tearful eyes. As a human being and close friends of his, we all broke down into tears as well especially, when we saw one of us is in deep pain. The bond of friendship was there, stronger than before. There are no words that we can say to comfort him other than just to be patience and strong.

Our hearts go out to Uncle Ahmad's family and love ones and our prayers goout to the late Danish Muazzam. Al-Fatihah

Hello everyone,

Starting tomorrow we - CIN are going to undergo an intensive revision together our beloved lecturer Mrs Arihati, to prepare us for the up and coming examination. At first, she told us that our Deputy Dean asked her to inform us that we have to finish our clinical placement first before undergoing the revision but however, thanks to someone special, the whole clinical thing was cancelled and we all are allowed to stay in IM or the new name is IHS to do our revision.

I' am looking forward to this whereby everybody is going to be focused and start putting their minds together to achieve such greatness. With that, I close this post with a few pictures of me and my fellow colleagues doing our PBL session within the last few days in IM.

Hello everyone,

It still has not hit me. It feels so strange. Michael Jackson is dead. He was only 50 years old, a milestone age. He just celebrated the 25^th anniversary of "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time, and re-released it in February.

People often underestimate the power of music, and the effect that it has on us. We sometimes forget how a great song with a feel-good message lifts us up, and makes us smile and remember the place we had the most fun dancing to it and with whom.

I never learned to do his moonwalk dance move, but like everyone else, I was blown away when I saw him unveil it on Motown's famous 25th anniversary TV special in 1984 ( Via YouTube)

I know he had been dealing with a lot these last few years. I hope that at the time of his passing he was in a happy place. Reportedly, he had been rehearsing in Los Angeles for the last two months, preparing for his London dates. His 50-year-old life may have been short, but it was impactful. His accomplishments are tremendous.

I offer my sincere condolences to his children, parents, siblings, and other family members, and to his friends and fans.

H1N1 Cases In Brunei

All Returning Students From Abroad.

Bandar Seri Begawan - Four more new influenza A (H1N1) cases were reported, making the total number of cases detected so far in the sultanate to six, the Ministry of Health said yesterday, adding that all the cases involved Brunei citizens.

The third case involved an 18-year-old male teenager who was also one of the contacts of the first case reported earlier. The patient first developed the symptoms on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

The fourth flu patient is a 20-year-old male student currently studying in the UK who returned home on June 18, and developed the symptoms on June 21, 2009.

Meanwhile, the fifth case involved a 13-year-old girl who travelled to Kuala Lumpur along with her family on Tuesday, June 16, 2009. All family members were having symptoms when they returned to Brunei on Friday, June 19, 2009.

The sixth case is a brother of the fifth patient, an 11-year-old boy who was also travelling with the group. All of these cases are currently undergoing treatment at Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital in Tutong and are in good condition.

The Ministry is now currently tracing all those who had close contact with the patients and those who are at risk will be quarantined.

Following the surge in the H1N1 case, the Ministry urged the public not be alarmed and worried. At the same time, the public should extend their cooperation by complying with the health advice given by the Ministry.

They include avoiding or postponing travel to the infected areas, to immediately seek examination or health treatment should they develop symptoms of the disease, especially those who have just arrived from abroad, to reduce public activities and social interaction within seven days after returning from abroad and to take precautionary steps by practising self-hygiene, especially when visiting foreign countries.

The Ministry of Health on Saturday said Brunei confirmed its first case of A (H1N1) influenza when a student was found infected with the flu virus more than 12 hours after arriving home on flight B1098 from London Heathrow on June 16, 2009. The student was confirmed to have contracted the virus after Rapid Result and other tests were carefully executed.

The 19-year-old Brunei student studying in the United Kingdom is currently on holiday. The student arrived here on June 16 but only showed H1N1 symptoms on June 19 evening. The student had his first emergency treatment at RIPAS Hospital on June 20 before being transferred for treatment and observation to the quarantine centre in Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital in Tutong.

The ministry believed the student was infected while in the UK, due to the fact that the student only showed signs of H1N1 symptoms three days after arrival, which is more than 20 hours, the ministry will not be contacting other passengers of flight BI098.

On Sunday, the Ministry once again announced that a second case was detected involving a Bruneian girl aged 16 years who went to Singapore on June 12.

The patient started to develop symptoms only on June 19, a day after arriving home from flight B10422.

She went to seek medical treatment at the Outpatient Services Bandar Seri Begawan Health Centre, Jalan Ong Sum Ping on June 20, 2009.

Dreams may not be the secret window into the frustrated desires of the unconscious that Sigmund Freud first posited in 1899, but growing evidence suggests that dreams - and, more so, sleep - are powerfully connected to the processing of human emotions.

According to new research presented last week at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Seattle, adequate sleep may underpin our ability to understand complex emotions properly in waking life. "Sleep essentially is resetting the magnetic north of your emotional compass," says Matthew Walker, director of the Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab at the University of California, Berkeley.

A recent study by Walker and his colleagues examined how rest - specifically, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep - influences our ability to read emotions in other people's faces. In the small analysis of 36 adults, volunteers were asked to interpret the facial expressions of people in photographs, following either a 60- or 90-minute nap during the day or with no nap. Participants who had reached REM sleep (when dreaming most frequently occurs) during their nap were better able to identify expressions of positive emotions like happiness in other people, compared with participants who did not achieve REM sleep or did not nap at all. Those volunteers were more sensitive to negative expressions, including anger and fear.

Past research by Walker and colleagues at Harvard Medical School, which was published in the journal Current Biology, found that in people who were sleep deprived, activity in the prefrontal lobe - a region of the brain involved in controlling emotion - was significantly diminished. He suggests that a similar response may be occurring in the nap-deprived volunteers, albeit to a lesser extent, and that it may have its roots in evolution. "If you're walking through the jungle and you're tired, it might benefit you more to be hypersensitive to negative things," he says. The idea is that with little mental energy to spare, you're emotionally more attuned to things that are likely to be the most threatening in the immediate moment. Inversely, when you're well rested, you may be more sensitive to positive emotions, which could benefit long-term survival, he suggests: "If it's getting food, if it's getting some kind of reward, finding a wife - those things are pretty good to pick up on."

Our daily existence is largely influenced by our ability "to understand our societal interactions, to understand someone else's emotional state of mind, to understand the expression on their face," says Ninad Gujar, a senior research scientist at Walker's lab and lead author of the study, which was recently submitted for publication. "These are the most fundamental processes guiding our personal and professional lives."

REM sleep appears to not only improve our ability to identify positive emotions in others; it may also round out the sharp angles of our own emotional experiences. Walker suggests that one function of REM sleep - dreaming, in particular - is to allow the brain to sift through that day's events, process any negative emotion attached to them, then strip it away from the memories. He likens the process to applying a "nocturnal soothing balm." REM sleep, he says, "tries to ameliorate the sharp emotional chips and dents that life gives you along the way."

That palliative safety-valve quality of sleep may be hampered when we fail to reach REM sleep or when REM sleep is disrupted, Walker says. "If you don't let go of the emotion, what results is a constant state of anxiety," he says.

At the biological level, Walker explains, the "emotional rind" translates to sympathetic nervous-system activity during sleep: faster heart rate and the release of stress chemicals. Understanding why nightmares recur and how REM sleep facilitates emotional processing - or hinders it, when nightmares take place and perpetuate the physical stress symptoms - may eventually provide clues to effective treatments of painful mental disorders. Perhaps, even, by simply addressing sleeping habits, doctors could potentially interrupt the emotional cycle that can lead to suicide. "There is an opportunity for prevention," Bernert says.

The new findings highlight what researchers are increasingly recognizing as a two-way relationship between psychiatric disorders and disrupted sleep. "Modern medicine and psychiatry have consistently thought that psychological disorders seem to have co-occuring sleep problems and that it's the disorder perpetuating the sleep problems," says Walker. "Is it possible that, in fact, it's the sleep disruption contributing to the psychiatric disorder?"

Hey guys, today I went out with my family to somewhere in the rural area, I can't remember what is the name of the kampong but it was such a nice place with a river at the back yard. This kind of area is where I usually de-stress myself from all the chaos that's happening in my life. Here there is no busy traffic, no phone signal, no air and water pollution and what's important is it's away from the city.

I grew up my entire life in the city therefore, having a good quality and quiet time is minimal but however, at this place I found peace and quiet. Having this peace and quiet helps me to think clearly and reminisce all the sweet memories in my life.

Hey guys, today is our last day in MJ. By next week, we are all moving in to the new IM - Institute of Medicine building. Although some of us (MJ-ians) are on and off already to IM however, next week is the official one.

It was such a sad day today at the campus, having to witness all the renovation process before UNISSA move in was really painful. I don't know how to bear the sadness in me. I may not look sad in front of you but however, my heart was crying out loud to leave MJ campus. Even worst, when we were asked by our coordinator to start clearing our stuff from our beloved main lecture room.

But sadness isn't going to hold us back forever because we still have a long journey to go. The stairs in the picture below is a resemblance of the trip and how is it going to be like in IM.

Danger of Portable Gas Stoves

This incident also happened in Andukli Recreation Park as one of tBSP staff having their picnic with 4WD Drive committee members last year or perhaps 2007. So, be extra careful when handling this potable gas cooker.

Just a precaution as I know a lot of you all do take Steamboat at Seaview Restaurant..

Now that I've warned you about the pictures I'm going to warn you about something else that will hopefully help you, or someone you know, avoid going through the same trauma that Kaori, and her family went through.

It was Kaori's last day with her family in Vancouver, Canada before going back to Japan. And like many Japanese celebrations this one involved food. Lots of food. Yakiniku it was - so out come the meat and veggies and we fired up the portable gas stove that we see used in many restaurants and households in Korean and Japanese influenced parts of the world.

Just as they had done hundreds of times before for yakiniku, sukiyaki, shyabu shyabu or nabe parties - they all gathered around and cooked our food on the gas stove which was placed in the center of the table. The marinated meat and tons of little side dishes, Kimchi (spicy pickled cabbage), Chapchae (stir fried noodles) and Namul (seasoned spinach), that they bought from the local Korean market were delicious. After cooking for a while the house started to get a little smokey so they opened the windows. The cool breeze felt great and the smoke quickly cleared.

They were just about to wrap things up. The kids had already eaten and they were playing with their Transformers on the other side of the room. The adults were grilling the last of the meat, drinking a couple beers and chit chatting. and that's when it happened. A flash of orange followed by a deafening bang! The butane canister inside to the portable gas stove had exploded. One side of the table. the side where Kaori, her mom and sister were sitting, was engulfed in flames. Before they could react a monstrous fireball of burning gas wrapped around them and tumbled towards the ceiling and out the window. After the initial explosion, the gas from the canister which covered the girls was still burning. They were on fire. We were all in shock.. then came the panic and screaming.then crying. The smell of burnt skin and hair was overwhelming.

Kaori's father Sako made sure the kids were OK. then they got wet towels to cool the burns. They called 911 and, after what seemed like an eternity, the ambulance and fire trucks arrived. The three girls were rushed to the hospital and treated for severe burns.

Hello everybody, having a nice weekend?

The author of this blogspot doesn't feel like having a nice weekend due to several facts. However, the author won't elaborate in details on how he feels but the author will say a few things that would make whoever may concern to think and realized something.

He doesn't want to start a war with anyone but this is what he feel about the issue, having to put his feeling a side within his heart is unbearable and he could not tolerate with it no more. Hence, whatever you may read down below is just words coming from the author's broken heart.

Don’t try to explain your mind cause I know what’s happening here. One minute, it’s love and suddenly, it’s like a battlefield. One words turns into a...... but why is it the smallest things that tear us down?

My world’s nothing when you’re gone and I’m out here without a shield, I can’t go back now cause going back won't make that much different. Both hands tied behind my back for nothing, these times when we climb so fast to fall again, Why we gotta fall for it now?

I NEVER meant to start a war, you know, I never wanna hurt you. I don’t even know what we’re fighting for and why does love always feel like a battlefield?

We can’t swallow our pride because neither of us wanna raised to the occasion but If we can’t surrender, then we’re both gonna protect on what we still have. We could pretend that we are friends for today and, in the next day we would be alright ‘cause baby, we don’t have to fight and I certainly don’t want this love to feel like a battlefield.

Hey guys, Sorry for the on and off personal life matter bloging. I'm having trouble on finding ideas on what to blog about actually. Plus, the fact that there's nothing much going on in my life right now other than just focusing on my upcoming exam; and with that focus, I managed to finished both of my assignments for this semester. Tomorrow, I'm gonna ask Mrs Hjh Maimunah to check the assignment whether it is what she's looking for in the topic I have chosen. I seriously am hoping it is what she's looking for because I don't wanna to redo the whole thing. You know how tiring,stressful and devestitating it is having to redo your assignment. (Cross Fingers) Ehehe, hopefully I won't have to. :)

Anyway, ever since I watched Kris Allen - the current American Idol winner sang this song called Heartless. I'm starting to get addicted to it. Oh God, please help me!!!! Ehehe, The song was originally recorded by Kanya West. However, the version on Kanya's album wasn't as good as the version from Kris Allen. NEW IM Building in UBD

Today during lunch hour, me and a couple of CIN members went to UBD to check out the new IM - Institute of Medicine building. The Institute where we all are going to study at. The building is now fully complete and we're expecting to move in by the end of May. The new IM building is complete with its own Administration centre, Research centre, Bio Chemistry labs, Anatomy & Physiology lab, PBL rooms, Communication centre, Clinical simulation centre, Medical and Surgical library and a Master lecture theater hall.

Hye guys, today I went out with some friends of mine for lunch at Manjaro Restaurant in Kiulap. The restaurant was suggested by Dr Amy Tien - a fellow surgeon I knew when I was doing my clinical placement in ward 6 a year ago.

For me, the menu is quite expensive but it does match the quality of the food, I tell you. But unfortunately as a student, I can't afford to go there as often as I want to.
